For those who may be new to Hindu culture, Janmashtami is a major festival celebrating Krishna’s birth and the values associated with his life, including love, compassion, devotion, courage, and the triumph of good over evil. The evening will bring the community together through prayer, music, chanting, and celebration. Beginning at 9:00 PM, guests are invited to experience Vishnu Sahasranamam, the devotional recitation of one thousand names of Lord Vishnu; Parayanam, the traditional reading or chanting of sacred texts; Bhajan, devotional songs sung in praise of God; and Kirtan, a lively form of group chanting and spiritual music often accompanied by instruments and audience participation. At 12:00 AM, the celebration will conclude with Aarti, a traditional Hindu worship ceremony in which light is offered before the deity as prayers and devotional songs are performed. Midnight is especially meaningful during Janmashtami because it symbolizes the traditional time of Lord Krishna’s birth, making this one of the most sacred moments of the evening.
